Our News division is one of the countries finest, our cameraman are available 24 hours, 7 days a week and are available on almost any camera kit configuration (House camera Sony XDCAM IMX 50). We regularly supply the nations television networks TVNZ, TV3 and Maori Television plus some of the major international ones, BBC, SKY and Channel 7.
At Colourfield our operators are true photojournalists they not only shoot great images, but look for great sound bites and know when to ask the right questions.
We've been on the cutting edge of some of the nations major breaking stories from land occupations and natural disasters to world leader summits. And it's not only news and current affairs that you'll find we have a wealth of experience in, our team have also worked on some of New Zealand's premiere documentaries and sporting fixtures.
TV3 New Zealand;
Dean Whitehead is a freelance cameraman in the Northland area, and all of our team at TV3 have enjoyed a long standing working relationship with him spanning two decades.
Quite simply, we rate him as the best freelance news cameraman in the North Island.
His shooting work, often under difficult circumstances reflecting the un-planned on-the-spot nature of news, is outstanding. His news sense is as good as any senior journalist, and he has a nack for finding stories, setting them up to be shot, then delivering to us a terrific product. Most of the time, he pulls this off on his own.
Dean's work has covered everything from politics, spot news, court, sport as well as numerous colour stories reflecting his community. Unsually for a cameraman who is not on staff, he has been commissioned by our current affairs programmes to shoot longer-duration pieces, eg. for Campbell Live.
Perhaps the best way to illustrate how valuable Dean is, not just in our eyes but also to our rival news organisations... is that when any story crops up in his patch, it is a race between us and our competitors to get to Dean first. In those occasions when I've made the call to him too late, I've been left with the feeling that we are going to come a poor second on a story. And that feeling has often come to fruition by the time the 6pm news is on air. In other words, you're better off having Dean working for you, than not working for you!
Chief of Staff
Television New Zealand;
Dean is very good cameraman but comes in to his own when he is asked to shoot a story by himself. He is exceptional at wrangling talent, interviewing them and shooting pictures for a remote story which he feeds to Auckland for a reporter to put together. This is a real talent and goes way beyond what we expect from camera operators.
Dean has also been known to find stories and shoot them by himself for a reporter in another location.
He is a popular with my reporters and they’re always keen to work with Dean because they know he’ll give them good pictures, strong interviews and excellent set-ups.
Auckland Bureau Editor, One News
As a freelance video producer and media trainer, I frequently rely on Dean for his unrivalled experience, skill, efficiency and good humour. I have been recommending Dean’s services on corporate projects for more than 15 years. We have produced countless news stories and corporate videos within New Zealand. And for several years we travelled the globe producing holiday videos for Air New Zealand.
When I need a skilled cameraman who is fast, flexible, talented and affable; Dean Whitehead remains the first person I call.
