David contributes to Creative COW magazine and also writes for CreativeCOW.net, and you can find him hosting in Creative COW's Apple Final Cut Pro and Business & Marketing forums.
SpecialityProfessional color correction or "color grading" isn't just just about fixing or correcting bad color. Grading is the finishing touch on every project that adds sparkle and magic to the individual visual elements, creating a seamless and unifying dimension throughout every scene and throughout the entire project. Like music, color is integral to the story, relaying subtle changes in mood or tone, working both consciously and subconsciously to capture audience attention, to heighten drama, and to convey meaning.

Our recent color correction/grading includes behind the scenes documentaries for the major studios on films such as the multiple Academy Award nominated, UP IN THE AIR, and many DVD and BluRay extra features, such as: The making of Final Destination 4, and Gangsta Vision: Making Menace II Society. Plus we've graded several recent documentaries, including the feature-length DVD release of BLESSINGS: The Tsoknyi Nangchen Nuns of Tibet; and SEX AND THE CINEMA, a one-hour TV special on the Starz Entertainment Network, and the 60-minute TV documentary, Sick & Sicker, for producer/director Logan Darrow Clements.
Hardware ProficiencyWe are exclusively users of Apple computer hardware, CalDigit Raids, AJA and Matrox video I/O devices, Sony and Panasonic cameras and VCRs, and Hitachi hard drives.
Software ProficiencyWe are primarily a Final Cut Studio facility, however we also have all of the Adobe software tools as well, and we use Autodesk Combustion for advanced compositing.

For our SD and HD color correction and color grading services we use the proper tool for each job, be it Apple Color, Magic Bullet Colorista, or of course, the Apple 3-Way Correction Filter.

David. Thanks so much for the conversation yesterday. You got me so excited about DR12 that I practically can't sleep. haha. Watched all the videos on the Davinci site yesterday. B&H is even offering Mac trash cans with DR11 pre installed. I'll hold off until 12 comes out. When did you say the release date is anticipated? Didn't see an exact time on their site. - Brian

Regarding tranfering our films footage from HDCAM tapes to digital files to complete for final edit for distribution.  I was told since I have so many tapes (41) it may be best to rent a JH3 deck. I think that option is good but I do need to discuss with someone regarding the technical side if pulling this off. I thought I should ask you. We had a dv transfer of tapes to do a offline edit which we did and have cut the film and have EDL.

Hi David,

I see you are very well versed with great credits! Thanks for taking the time to respond to my newbie query.

I'm embarrassed to say that I directed the world's first HD satellite video conference (Hong Kong to Mass.) for a fashion company back in the early-90s with John Galt who was with Sony at the time, but have not kept up with the technology (obviously).

I look forward to learning more about HD.

Best,

Malcolm

Hi back at you Malcolm and welcome to the Cow!

You're clearly not a newbie, so you'll be just fine now that you know where to come to get help.

Things were actually easier a few years back, because there were standards. Now, there are many new formats and hardly any standards to rely upon.

In any case, you're already getting back up to speed already, and you'll find that the Cow is a superior place to get info you can trust.

THNX for taking the time to reach out, I always like to get hear good feedback.

All the best,
David
